How GPA and CGPA Actually Work in Pakistani Universities

A plain-English guide to grade points, credit hours, relative grading and the 4.00 scale used by HEC-recognised universities in Pakistan.
Grade points and credit hours
Every course you take carries a number of credit hours, and every letter grade maps to a number of grade points on the 4.00 scale. Your GPA for a semester is the sum of (grade points × credit hours) divided by the total credit hours attempted.
This is why a bad grade in a 4-credit course hurts far more than the same grade in a 1-credit lab: the weight of a course in your GPA is exactly its credit hours.
Absolute vs relative grading
Universities such as the University of the Punjab and COMSATS mostly use absolute grading, where fixed marks bands map to fixed letter grades. NUST, FAST and GIKI use relative grading in many core courses, where your grade depends on the class mean and standard deviation.
Under relative grading, scoring 62% can still be an A if the class average is 45%. That is why you should never predict your grade from raw marks alone at a relative-grading university.
CGPA is a weighted average, not a simple average
Your CGPA is not the average of your semester GPAs unless every semester had identical credit hours. Semesters with more credit hours pull your CGPA harder.
